Chest Freezer Baskets: One Way to Spring Clean Your Freezer

Springtime is here and you know what that means: it’s time to clean! Spring cleaning can be a great way to give your home a sense of order again after all of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Plus, after winter, we’re sure that your home will need some refreshing in order to make it feel warm and welcoming again for the rest of the year.

To help you get started on your spring cleaning tasks, Frigidaire recommends that you take a look at one area of your kitchen/pantry/basement that seems to get neglected all year long: the chest freezer.

Chest freezers can be a great help when it comes to storing bulk foods and leftovers, but without the proper care and organization, your chest freezer can become a mess to deal with. To spring clean your freezer so that it works more efficiently and is more organized, use some of these tips (and chest freezer baskets) from Frigidaire:

1.) Start out by going through your freezer and checking the expiration dates on the foods you've frozen, or, just go through and throw out any foods that are way past their prime. Chances are, there are a lot of things in there that need to be tossed.

2.) Once you've cleaned out the expired food, also go through and take stock of what foods are actually there. Most people tend to forget about all of the food they have in stock and end up buying much more than they need. Make a list of what foods you have and post it to the outside of the fridge if it helps.

3.) Next, take out your foods and store them in a cooler. This is only temporary. Then, go through your freezer and using a mild cleaner, wipe down the interior, making sure to wipe up any grime, splatters, or spills that might have made their way into your freezer.

4.) Once you've cleaned your freezer, use chest freezer baskets to get things organized. Chest freezer baskets from Frigidaire come in a variety of sizes to accommodate a variety of different foods, not to mention, freezers. Add a few chest freezer baskets to your shopping list and use them to organize your leftovers and get control over your ice cream containers.

5.) As you start to add your food back to the freezer, consider using a new system to keep things organized. For example, try putting all of your frozen meats in one chest freezer basket, or use chest freezer baskets that are labeled to organize your freezer by date frozen.

6.) After you've replaced all of your foods into your freezer and reorganized them, it's time to clean the exterior. Use a sponge, cloth, or paper towels and a mild cleaner to go over the exterior of your chest freezer. Take care to get off any grime, dust, or fingerprints that may have built up over time. Also, don't forget to clean out your coils (if your freezer has them).
